Oh, SMD, how I love your truth.

    :-)

Better re-think #25. There is no fiddle, steel, or banjo on Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.”

Oh, and Jesus was a hell fire and damnation preacher.

Duly noted Sammy. I should have included solo acoustic guitar on the list.

Better double check #23. My dad went to UNC. According to him, the “Dook” rivalry precedes the NCSU rivalry.
    #17 is absolute truth!

^Probably the selective memory of a Tarheel. ;) To expand upon my point, I was not saying there wasn’t a Duke/UNC-CH rivalry, but in terms of pure hatred, that didn’t start until Coach K usurped Deano’s spot on the throne. When I was a kid, we fought like cats and dogs on the playground about State and UNC-CH, Duke was an afterthought. NOBODY was a Duke fan. That program didn’t even get their first national title until 91. The Pack and the ‘Holes won three national titles between them during the 70’s and 80’s. THAT was the heated rivalry then. Granted, State hasn’t kept up our end of the bargain, but all the attention on Duke/UNC-CH is largely a product of the last 15 years of both programs being so good, and a TON of ESPN hype.

But hey, your Dad has his opinion, I’ve got mine. ;)

Most people also wouldn’t believe that until 1991, NC State had more all-time wins, ACC Championships and NCAA Championships than Duke, and led the all-time series with them. Oh well, ’tis in the past.

Love *most* of the list. Clinton as best politician, yes - smartest, no. (Though it depends on how far back we are going).

Also - I can think of a few Bocephus songs with none of those instruments.

Wookie - Granted, “our lifetime” can be pretty much anything since we don’t have an exact demographic for this blog, but lets just use 1970 and up for the sake of argument. I have followed politics my whole life and can’t remember someone who could sit down and talk off the top of their head about inane policy and political details like Bill Clinton. My partisan leanings aside, I truly think you’d be hard pressed to find a smarter President in the bunch. Of course, maybe the word “smarter” itself is subjective. ;)

Who would you say then is the smartest?

    argl.

  • Wookie // January 13, 2008 at 9:31 am

Depends on how you define it, naturally.

Despite having a degree from Duke, Dick Nixon was a pretty smart guy.

One point I forgot - you really think I wouldn’t have liked Ike 50 years ago??

  • southernmaledemocrat // January 13, 2008 at 10:45 am

^Put the Wookie of the 21st century in the 50’s and of course you’d like Ike. But, had you actually lived back then, my belief is the odds are strong you would have been a staunch Democrat, because that was the social norm. Look at the swath (is that word? ;) ) of southeastern states starting with NC, going down through LA. Ike didn’t win ANY of those states in 52 or 56.

Ike was a moderate through and through, which is why he said this -

“Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are…a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.”

    Heck, I LOVE Ike. ;)

How smart can Clinton be when he wasn’t wise enough to keep his nose clean and behave himself while President? But I admit, if I were married to Hillary I’d probably be trolling for some strange too. Partisanship aside, Gerald Ford’s intellect has been seriously under-appreciated, I guess due to his physical clumsiness. Jack Kennedy was probably the most academically gifted President of my lifetime, and possessed by far the sharpest wit (which I regard as a sure sign of mental acuity.) IMHO JFK is the smartest President of my lifetime, Reagan the best, Carter the worst, Clinton the most savvy politician (despite his personal weaknesses), Ford, Bush 43, and Ike all kind of bunched together somewhere above LBJ, Nixon, and Bush 41.

Heh….wrong. I have a 27-yr-old “Go to Hell Dook” button on my bulletin board. We’ve always hated Dook. It’s just before Coach K we hated State more.

  • southernmaledemocrat // February 14, 2008 at 9:13 am

    ^Welcome, Betsy.

You have refined my point nicely. UNC-CH has always hated Duke, but it took a back seat to State until the rise of Coach K and the fall of Coach V.

Unfortunately, many bandwagon fans don’t know that. And it is entirely my team’s fault for not keeping pace. Frankly, I don’t know that we’ll ever make up the lost ground.

  • Ed Cone // February 14, 2008 at 9:28 am

Dook has always been hated by UNC fans.

This hatred deepened when K made Dook good again. State was the big enemy in my childhood (Thompson years), and the rivalry with State is historic and heated, but Dook’s b-ball glory in the ’60s (and its football glory in the ’30s), not to mention the fact that it is Dook, created a hatred much more ancient than you may realize.

Reynolds = Ryman? So, Ryman is the second-best arena in country music, and was ditched for a shiny but soulless new place named after a bank?

  • southernmaledemocrat // February 14, 2008 at 9:45 am

    Nice shot Ed! ;)

My point was that both buildings are the “mother church” of their industries (couldn’t really think of a better word there, but you get my point…).

The ACC as we know it today was born in Reynolds in the 50’s and country music was born at the Ryman in the 40s and 50’s.

Of course, neither building is “second-best.” ;)

    I miss Carmichael.
